A custom nightguard is an investment in protecting your teeth from grinding and clenching. Like anything you wear every night, it lasts longer and stays fresher with a little routine care.
The good news is that keeping your guard clean is quick and easy. At Valley Dental Turlock, here is the simple routine we recommend to our patients.
Clean it every morning
Rinse your nightguard with cool or lukewarm water as soon as you take it out, then gently brush it with a soft toothbrush. You can use a small amount of mild soap or a non-abrasive toothpaste, but skip harsh or whitening toothpastes, which can scratch the surface and create spots where bacteria collect. Cleaning it right after use, while any film is still soft, makes the job easier and keeps your guard fresh, much like brushing your own teeth. If you wear it during the day for clenching, give it the same quick rinse and brush whenever you take it out.
Store and dry it properly
After cleaning, let your guard air dry completely before putting it away, since a moist case can encourage bacteria and odor. Always store it in its ventilated case, never loose in a bag or pocket where it can be crushed or contaminated. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from hot water, the dishwasher, a hot car, or any hot surface, because heat can warp the material and ruin the fit. If you have pets, store the case up high, since dogs in particular are drawn to the scent of a nightguard and can destroy one quickly.
Everyday do’s and don’ts
A few simple habits keep your guard safe and hygienic between cleanings:
- Do wash your hands before handling it to avoid transferring germs.
- Do rinse the case itself every few days and let it dry.
- Do keep it away from young children and pets when it is not in use.
- Do not use boiling water or harsh chemicals like bleach, which can damage the material.
- Do not chew on the guard or wear it if it feels cracked or loose.
These small steps protect both your guard and your investment, helping it do its job night after night.
Deep clean it regularly
Once or twice a week, give your guard a deeper clean. You can soak it in a denture cleaner or a mix of equal parts water and white vinegar for the time the product recommends, then rinse thoroughly. Avoid soaking it in mouthwash or hot water. This periodic refresh helps remove film and keeps the guard hygienic between your regular dental visits.
Know when to replace it
Inspect your guard regularly for cracks, thinning, warping, or a fit that no longer feels snug. A damaged or ill-fitting guard cannot protect your teeth properly. Bring your nightguard to your routine cleanings and exams so we can check its condition, and let us know if you notice changes. When the time comes, we can make a replacement that fits perfectly.
