Common Questions, Answered
How do I properly brush my teeth?
You only need a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste each time you brush. Brush at least twice a day for two minutes each time. Your toothbrush should have soft bristles and be replaced every three to four months, or sooner if it is visibly damaged or the bristles are fraying. The American Dental Association states that both manual and electric toothbrushes can be effective, though we recommend electric toothbrushes.
How often should I change my toothbrush?
Your toothbrush should be changed at least every three to four months. Replace it more frequently if it shows physical signs of wear, such as frayed bristles.
How do I properly floss my teeth?
Flossing is just as important as brushing. Its purpose is not just removing food from between your teeth, but also plaque that would otherwise lead to decay, gum disease, and bad breath. Start with clean hands and about a foot and a half of floss, winding it around your fingers to expose a few inches at a time. Remember there are two sides to each gap, scoop out plaque following the curve of each tooth, and unwind to a clean section as you move along. Ask our dentist or hygienist to demonstrate the proper technique at your next cleaning.
Why should I see a dentist?
Properly brushing and flossing twice a day is necessary for a healthy smile, but it is not a substitute for professional cleanings. Only professional cleanings by your dentist or dental hygienist can remove the plaque buildup that leads to gum disease. The most effective way to ensure the health of your teeth and gums is to come in for your routine cleanings.
How often should I go to the dentist?
The American Dental Association recommends a dental cleaning every six months. However, patients who are more prone to gingivitis are encouraged to come in more often, every three to four months, to prevent infections. This is also recommended for patients with dental implants.
How do I know if I have gum disease?
Periodontitis, also known as gum disease, is a preventable infection that can damage and destroy teeth to the point of tooth loss. It begins with the buildup of plaque and tartar from oral bacteria. Warning signs include bleeding gums, receding gums, swollen gums, and even the loss of teeth. Learn more about our gum disease treatment.
How does gum disease impact heart health?
Luckily, gum disease is treatable and can be detected by your dentist even in its early stages. If left untreated, it can lead to serious health concerns including a risk of stroke and heart attack. Your oral health is tied to your overall health.
What is cosmetic dentistry?
Cosmetic dentistry differs from general dentistry in that its purpose is not oral health but rather aesthetic appearance. At Valley Dental Turlock, our cosmetic dentistry team will work with you to create the personalized results you have always dreamed of. Your perfect smile is just a consultation away.
What are porcelain veneers?
Dental veneers are uniquely made cosmetic devices that enhance the appearance of your teeth. These custom-made shells improve color and shape, reduce gaps, and erase chips. There are two types, porcelain and resin, that vary in cost and durability, with porcelain being the more durable option. See our veneers page for details.
I have missing teeth. How can you help?
Dental implants are the gold standard for restoring missing teeth. They bolt into your jaw bone for the most secure and realistic anchor, and a cap or crown is then attached for a natural appearance. Another option is a dental bridge, which bridges the gap of a missing tooth. Explore implants and crowns & bridges.
I have stained or discolored teeth. What should I do?
Whitening your teeth is the quickest way to change your smile. A daily cup of coffee or glass of red wine takes a toll on the appearance of your teeth. You could take years of stains off in just one hour in our office. Whether you have an upcoming wedding, job interview, or party, professional teeth whitening can give you the confidence boost you need.
What should I do about old, discolored fillings?
Aside from being noticeable, amalgam fillings can harm your health, they often contain mercury or other heavy metals. They also do not flex when pressure is applied, which can cause more cracks in the teeth. This is why we recommend replacing amalgam fillings. Learn about our tooth-colored fillings.
Do misaligned teeth affect my oral health?
Aligning your teeth is not just cosmetic. It changes the position of your entire mouth, including the jaw and tongue, which can open your airway and alleviate snoring and sleep apnea. Straighter teeth are also easier to brush and floss, so patients with aligned teeth are less likely to have gum disease or tooth decay. Ask us about clear aligners.
What should I do if a tooth gets knocked out?
Timing is critical, try to reach a dentist within 30 minutes. Pick up the tooth by the crown, never the root. Rinse it with water only; do not use any products, scrub, or dry it. If possible, return the tooth to its socket and hold it in place. If you cannot, keep it moist in your mouth or in milk (never tap water), then see a dentist right away. It is sometimes possible to save a tooth even outside that 30-minute window. For urgent help, contact us.
